The UFC is reportedly attempting to book a bout between Aljamain Sterling and Henry Cejudo for UFC 284, which will take place in Perth, Australia. This information comes from MMA journalist Ariel Helwani.
During a recent broadcast of The MMA Hour, Helwani shared the news that the planned showdown between Aljamain Sterling and Cejudo would take place.
At UFC 280, which took place not long ago, Sterling successfully defended his UFC bantamweight title against TJ Dillashaw. During his second title defense as champion, he secured the victory over Dillashaw by way of a technical knockout in the second round.
Since suffering a knockout defeat at the hands of Marlon Moraes in December 2017, Sterling has gone on to win eight consecutive fights. At UFC 251, he defeated Petr Yan by disqualification, and then, at UFC 273, he successfully defended his championship against Petr Yan in a split decision.

After an absence from competition that lasted nearly three years, Cejudo will be eligible for an immediate crack at the bantamweight title if the story from Helwani turns out to be genuine. At his last championship defense, which took place at UFC 248, he was victorious over Dominick Cruz. After that, he gave up the belt and retired.
UFC Plans Aljamain Sterling vs. Henry Cejudo Next
A prospective battle between Aljamain Sterling and Cejudo has been discussed back and forth throughout the course of the past year. After Aljamain Sterling gave the impression that Cejudo would have to beg for a crack at the title, it now appears that Cejudo won’t have to ask at all in order to get the opportunity.
Cejudo submitted his sample to the USADA testing pool once more at the beginning of this year in the hopes of being reinstated to the UFC. Following a discussion with UFC matchmakers Hunter Campbell and Sean Shelby, Cejudo proposed that he and Sterling engage in a bout.
Cejudo has also requested a super fight against the current UFC Featherweight Champion, Alexander Volkanovski. However, it appears that Volkanovski will compete against Islam Makhachev for the lightweight title. Earlier this year, when Max Holloway had to drop out of the fight against Volkanovski, he offered to take his place.
Aljamain Sterling’s intentions towards a potential bout with Cejudo have been inconsistent as of late. He previously stated his concern that the battle would not catch the curiosity of spectators, despite the fact that he appeared to be receptive to the contest.
The booking would also put an end to UFC President Dana White’s previously announced desire to make the winner of the Sean O’Malley vs. Petr Yan fight the next challenger for the belt. At UFC 280, O’Malley prevailed over Yan by virtue of a split decision.
The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) will hold UFC 284, the second pay-per-view show of 2023, on Saturday, February 11th. It’s possible that a title bout between Makhachev and Volkanovski will be scheduled for this event as well.
